Ex-Googler Dhanji R. Prasanna worked on the ill-fated Google Wave project so he has had a lot of experience dealing with their infrastructure. Not surprisingly he states that it's composed of dated technology that was designed with indexes and crawlers in mind. What's interesting is the mention of technologies like jQuery and mongoDB in an article about Google.
