I found out about Kramdown from Nanoc, but now use it (and the command-line tool) pretty regularly, mainly becasue Kramdown reads some syntax Markdown doesn't implement (like definition lists which I use a fair bit). As a bonus extra related link, the Haskell-based Pandoc is a neat HTML/Markdown/more converter and there's an online Pandoc.
