The designers I've worked with are most exasperated when we ignore the grid--even two or three pixels' difference in something like line-height totally drives them nuts, which is what so gratifying about starting with a grid layout that already has that worked out.
I guess they've been too busy with that issue to scream about developers' propensity to terminal/console color schemes.
Yea, I love working with a grid system. I use them in all of my projects now.
Might I also suggest John McWade. He has a series of video tutorials where he breaks good design down into really logical steps, no hand waving. http://www.bamagazine.com/
